Starlink on 12V: DC power options and inverters by kit

At a glance

A Starlink Mini runs on 12–48 V DC with no inverter. Standard 4 and 4 X can use Starlink's DC-input supplies where sold, or a pure-sine inverter; V5 has no DC option, so it needs an inverter.

Our research and corrections process

Short answer: a Starlink Mini runs on 12–48 V DC, so it can use a vehicle outlet, a 12 V battery or a 100 W USB-C source with no inverter. Standard 4 and V5 kits come with AC power supplies, so on 12 V you need a pure-sine inverter, or, for Standard 4 and Standard 4 X, one of Starlink’s own DC-input supplies (the DC-DC Power Supply takes 12–48 V and is available in select markets; check the Starlink shop); there’s no DC option for V5.

Draw figures: Starlink Help Center (idle 15 W for Mini; 20 W for Standard 4/4 X and Actuated) and the V5 spec sheet. More detail is in our power consumption guide.

The Mini is the easy case. Use Starlink’s Mini Car Adapter, a DC lead to a 12 V battery, or a USB-C car charger that holds 100 W (20 V/5 A) on one port with Starlink’s Mini USB-C cable. Our Mini car adapter guide covers outlets and chargers, and Mini portable power covers batteries.

Starlink offers DC-input supplies for Standard 4 and Standard 4 X (Starlink Help Center). The Standard DC-DC Power Supply accepts 12–48 V DC, uses XT60 connectors and 12 AWG wire, and can run from a van, RV or boat house battery without an inverter; it’s available in select markets, so check the Starlink shop. The Advanced Power Supply takes AC or DC input. Buy it from Starlink, and don’t substitute a third-party supply. See our Starlink power supply guide.

Inverters for Standard 4 and V5

With an inverter, the kit’s normal AC power supply plugs in as it would at home. Choose pure-sine output, and match the wiring to the load.

  • Hardwire for Standard kits. At 75–100 W, a Standard pulls close to 10 A at 12 V once inverter losses are counted, which is near or above many cigarette-socket fuses.
  • A socket inverter suits V5 and Mini. Their lower draw stays well inside a typical socket.
  • Count idle draw. An inverter uses some power even with no load, which matters most for small kits.

Math, not a test: 100 W ÷ 12 V ≈ 8.3 A before inverter losses.

Hardwired 12V inverter for any Starlink AC power supply

Check the fitThird-party pure-sine inverter. Hardwire to a 12V battery (not a cigarette socket) to run any Starlink AC power supply; a 100W Standard draws about 9–10A at 12V. Idle draw under 0.8A (about 10W) adds to small loads like a Mini.

12V-socket inverter for Mini or V5 power supplies

Check the fitThird-party pure-sine inverter for a 12V socket. Fine for Starlink Mini or V5 power supplies. A Standard 4 or 4 X (75–100W) needs a 15A socket and the engine running; on a 10A socket it may blow the fuse. For Standard kits, prefer a hardwired inverter. Starlink lists Standard 4 and 4 X at 75–100W average but publishes no peak draw.

Battery sizing and running time

A starting battery isn’t built for hours of draw. For overnight use, run from a deep-cycle house battery or a power station; the station’s car charging input can top it up while you drive.

What to avoid

  • Third-party replacement power supplies, or DIY conversions that bypass Starlink’s supply.
  • Long, thin 12 V runs: voltage drop rises with length and current. Keep DC cables short and properly fused, and see our Starlink cable guide for the dish cable.
  • Modified-sine inverters for the AC supplies.

FAQ

Can Starlink run on 12 V?

Yes. The Mini runs on 12 V DC directly. Standard 4 and 4 X can use one of Starlink’s DC-input supplies where sold; V5 and Actuated kits need an inverter.

Will Starlink drain my car battery?

It can if the engine is off for long. A Mini at 25–40 W adds up over hours; use a separate battery or station for long sessions.

Is there a DC power supply for V5?

No. V5 ships with an AC supply, so use a pure-sine inverter.
