Starlink mesh Wi-Fi: Starlink nodes, an extender, or your own mesh?

At a glance

Extend Starlink Wi-Fi with Router Mini or Router 3 mesh nodes, a third-party extender, or your own mesh in bypass mode. Includes a compatibility chart.

Our research and corrections process

If your Starlink Wi-Fi doesn’t reach every room, you have three options. You can add Starlink mesh nodes (Router Mini or Router 3), use a third-party extender alongside the Starlink router, or put the Starlink router in bypass mode and run your own mesh system. For most homes, Starlink’s own mesh is the simplest, because it’s managed in the Starlink app. Third-party mesh nodes can’t join a Starlink mesh. New to Starlink routers? Start with the Starlink router guide.

What Starlink states:

  • Router Mini meshes with any current Starlink system except the Gen 1 router (Router Mini install guide).
  • Router 3 can be a mesh node with any Starlink system except the Gen 1 router, which can’t mesh (Starlink router comparison). Router 3 can’t physically replace the Gen 2 router, which powers the dish. With the Starlink Ethernet Adapter you can wire Router 3 behind it, then bypass the Gen 2 router in the app, to use Router 3 as your main Wi-Fi router. Exiting bypass needs a factory reset (Starlink’s Gen 3 setup guide for Gen 2 kits).
  • The older Starlink Mesh router works only with the Gen 2 router. The Gen 1 router can’t mesh at all (Starlink router comparison).
  • Starlink’s routers don’t form a mesh with third-party routers or mesh nodes (V5 specification sheet; router comparison).
  1. Get your main Starlink system online first.
  2. Place each node no more than about two rooms from the previous one, off the floor and away from heavy obstructions (Router Mini install guide).
  3. Wired (recommended): run an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the main router to the node’s WAN port (a Gen 2 router needs the Ethernet Adapter). Use Starlink’s Mini cable for a Starlink Mini, or Cat5e or better between routers.
  4. Wireless: power on the node, open the Starlink app and tap “Pair” when the new-node prompt appears.

Router Mini is the smallest Starlink node and is sold on its own (Starlink shop). See our Router Mini guide. Gen 2 owners who want wired backhaul also need the Ethernet Adapter.

When your own mesh makes more sense

If you already have a mesh system you like, or you need advanced controls, you can put Starlink in bypass mode and let your system take over. Read our bypass mode guide first, because it’s hard to undo.

Third-party mesh for bypass setups

None of these systems can join a Starlink mesh. Put the Starlink router in bypass mode and connect the mesh system’s main unit to it by Ethernet, or leave Starlink Wi-Fi on and accept double NAT. Check the bypass mode guide first, because undoing bypass needs a factory reset.
